The Super Eagles of Nigeria have emerged victorious in the 2025 Unity Cup final, defeating Jamaica's Reggae Boys 5-4 on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw in regulation time.
Nantes winger Moses Simon, who opened the scoring for Nigeria and successfully converted his spot-kick during the shootout, described the match as a difficult encounter against the physical Jamaican side.
"We expected a tough game because they are a difficult side, they are very physical so the coach told us to be calm and we had a good result against them," Simon said after the match.
The victory marks the first trophy for the Super Eagles under new head coach Eric Chelle, providing a positive boost following what has been described as a turbulent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
Simon expressed the team's delight at securing silverware under their new manager: "Everyone is excited, everyone is glad. Of course it's the first trophy with the new manager and I will say every trophy is a trophy and we cherish it and we will keep going."
Coach Chelle made four changes to his lineup for the final against Jamaica, a tactical decision that ultimately paid off despite the challenging nature of the match.
What's Next for the Super Eagles?
Following their Unity Cup triumph, the Super Eagles will not have much time to celebrate as they prepare to face Russia in an international friendly. The match is scheduled for Friday at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
This upcoming friendly presents another opportunity for Coach Chelle to further develop his tactical approach with the team as they look to build on their Unity Cup success.
The victory has generated positive reactions from Nigerian football fans who will be hoping this success marks the beginning of a new era for the national team under Chelle's leadership.
