A Gazan physician, Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar, has died from wounds sustained in an Israeli airstrike that killed nine of his ten children last week, according to media reports from Gaza.
The airstrike targeted al-Najjar's family home in Khan Younis, leaving only one of his children alive. His wife, Dr. Alaa al-Najjar, survived the attack as she was at work when the strike occurred.
Prior to his death, Dr. Alaa was photographed visiting her injured husband in the intensive care unit at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, where he was receiving treatment for his injuries.
Last week, an image that circulated widely showed Dr. Hamdi standing beside his only surviving child. At that time, he appeared physically unharmed, raising questions about the circumstances that led to his subsequent deterioration and death.
The cause of Dr. Hamdi's death has not been independently verified by international sources.
Israeli Military Response
The Israeli military had previously issued a statement regarding the airstrike, saying: "An aircraft targeted several suspects identified by IDF forces operating in a structure near their position in the Khan Younis area."
The statement further claimed that "Khan Younis is a dangerous combat zone that was cleared of civilians by the IDF for their protection prior to the start of operations," adding that "claims of harm to non-combatants are under review."
The incident has drawn renewed attention to civilian casualties in Gaza amid the ongoing conflict, particularly the impact on medical professionals and their families who remain in the territory.
The al-Najjar family tragedy represents one of the most devastating single-family losses reported in recent weeks in the Gaza Strip, where healthcare workers continue to operate under extremely challenging conditions.
