Enyimba FC's Sports Director Ifeanyi Ekwueme has described the club's 2024-25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign as "difficult" after the People's Elephant finished sixth in the league standings.
Despite falling short of domestic expectations, the Aba giants reached the group stage of the CAF Champions League, though they failed to progress further in the continental competition.
"Last season wasn't quite a pleasant one for us," Ekwueme told Completesports. "We didn't actualise our target. But then, we're grateful to God for reaching the group stage of the CAF Champions League and finishing in third place, which was good enough to ensure Nigeria still has two spots in the continental competitions."
The club's continental performance, despite not advancing beyond the group stage, proved crucial for Nigerian football as it helped preserve the country's two qualification spots for future CAF Champions League competitions.
Enyimba, one of Nigeria's most successful clubs with multiple NPFL titles and continental trophies, will be looking to bounce back stronger in the upcoming season after what Ekwueme acknowledged was a campaign that fell below their usual standards.
The People's Elephant recently saw the departure of striker Brown Ideye after a short spell with the club, as reported earlier, adding to the challenges the team faced throughout the season.
