Clifford University, Owerrinta, Abia State has suspended a Faculty Officer, Mr. Obioma Nwogwgwu, following allegations of sexual harassment made against him by a 17-year-old female law student.

The university management announced the indefinite suspension, effective from May 29, 2025, in response to petitions filed by Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation, an Abia State-based rights group. The petitions were submitted to both the university administration and the Okpualangwa Divisional Police headquarters.

The university also addressed concerns about student results, assuring the public that all academic records have been properly vetted by the University Senate and are currently maintained by the Registry. Students experiencing issues with their results were advised to contact the Registry for resolution.

Call for Fair Investigation

Marvelous Ochiegbu, Director of the Abia State Chapter of Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation, commended the university for taking swift action but called for transparency in handling the case. Speaking on Saturday, Ochiegbu requested that his organization be involved in the investigation process "to ensure that the matter is not swept under the carpets."

The rights group also emphasized the importance of protecting the female student from potential victimization as the investigation proceeds.

This case highlights ongoing concerns about sexual harassment in Nigerian higher education institutions and the growing role of human rights organizations in advocating for accountability in such matters.
