Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers has publicly backed Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle to achieve significant success with the Nigerian national team, while also expressing his personal ambition to feature at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Chelle, who took charge of the Super Eagles in January following his stint with Mali at the 2023 AFCON, has made a promising start to his tenure with two victories and one draw in his first three matches.
"Positive, I saw what he [Chelle] did at Mali for example. He made the team play with a good structure, so I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do together," Dessers told Soccernet in a recent interview.
The 30-year-old forward, who has yet to represent Nigeria at a major tournament despite his club success, revealed his eagerness to be part of the squad for the upcoming continental championship in Morocco, for which Nigeria has already secured qualification.
"I hope to be there, I hope I can help the team there and achieve our dream together," Dessers stated. "Of course, it would be a dream to go to the AFCON with Nigeria, that would be one of the last things to finish off my career, it would be really beautiful."
Dessers' comments come as the Super Eagles continue their preparations under Chelle's guidance, with recent fixtures including matches in the Unity Cup where they faced Ghana and Jamaica.
The former Mali coach has been praised for introducing a more structured approach to the team's play, something that appears to have resonated with players like Dessers who are fighting for regular spots in the national team setup.
With AFCON 2025 scheduled to take place in Morocco, Dessers will be hoping his club performances can convince Chelle to include him in the final squad for what would be a significant milestone in his international career.
