Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has disclosed the personal message he shared with Real Betis midfielder Isco following the Blues' triumph in the UEFA Europa Conference League final on Wednesday night.
Chelsea came from behind to secure an emphatic 4-1 victory over the Spanish LaLiga side, with goals from Enzo Fernandez, Moisés Caicedo, Nicolas Jackson, and Jadon Sancho sealing the trophy for the London club.
Speaking to Movistar after the match, Maresca revealed he specifically sought out his former Malaga teammate Isco to commend the 33-year-old's performance despite being on the losing side.
"I told Isco at the end that he has a quality that makes the difference," Maresca said, highlighting the respect he holds for the former Real Madrid star.
The connection between the two dates back to their playing days at Malaga, where they shared the pitch before their careers took different paths. Isco went on to enjoy a successful spell at Real Madrid and also played for Valencia before joining Real Betis.
For Chelsea, the victory marks a significant achievement in Maresca's tenure, adding European silverware to the club's trophy cabinet after a remarkable comeback performance in the final.
Real Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini acknowledged the defeat, stating that "Chelsea hurt us" in his post-match comments, as his side failed to maintain their early advantage in the contest.
