Unidentified gunmen, suspected to be herdsmen, launched an attack on commuters along the Oweto-Apa-Adoka-Otukpo road in Benue State on Friday evening, resulting in multiple kidnappings and at least one confirmed death.

The attack occurred between Asaba and Olojo, where the armed men ambushed travelers moving in both directions between Otukpo and Oweto. According to reports, several truck drivers and other commuters were abducted during the incident.

An eyewitness account revealed that a commercial motorcyclist (Okada rider) who was transporting a casket to Agatu was killed during the attack. His motorcycle and the casket were left abandoned on the road alongside several trucks.

John Ikwulono, former chairman of Apa Local Government Area in Benue State, confirmed the incident to DAILY POST but noted that the total number of casualties remains unknown.

"Aside from the guy who was killed by the roadside, we don't know how many casualties at the moment. Gunshots were sporadic; I believe that was done to get down those who may be trying to escape," Ikwulono stated.

Attempts to reach the Benue State Police spokesperson, Catherine Anene, for official comment were unsuccessful as she did not respond to calls at the time of filing this report.

This attack adds to the growing security concerns in Benue State, which has witnessed several similar incidents in recent months. The Oweto-Apa-Adoka-Otukpo road is a crucial transportation route in the region, connecting multiple communities.

Security agencies are yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident or any rescue operations for the kidnapped victims.
