Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has disclosed that his administration inherited a fragile security situation from his predecessor, Samuel Ortom, while highlighting significant steps taken to address these challenges over the past two years.
Speaking during his second anniversary celebration held at IBB Square in Makurdi on Thursday, Governor Alia reflected on the security landscape he encountered upon assuming office.
"Although we inherited a fragile security situation, we have taken bold steps towards restoring the safety of lives and property, as well as maintaining law and order," Alia stated during his address.
Security Initiatives Under Alia's Administration
The governor highlighted the establishment of Operation Anyam Nyôr, a state-backed security outfit, which he said has significantly empowered law enforcement agencies to combat armed herders, bandits, and other criminal elements terrorizing communities across the state.
To enhance operational capabilities, Alia's administration has distributed Hilux vans, security vehicles, and motorcycles to various security agencies and local outfits, strengthening their ability to respond to security threats effectively.
"Let me assure you that we are on the trail of the terrorists, armed herders, and bandits terrorizing some parts of our state, and very soon, we will decimate them and all other criminal syndicates," the governor vowed, expressing confidence in his administration's security strategy.
The governor's remarks come amid ongoing security concerns in parts of Benue State, which has historically faced challenges from armed herders and other criminal elements, particularly in rural communities.
The second anniversary celebration provided a platform for Governor Alia to highlight his administration's achievements and ongoing initiatives across various sectors, with security featuring prominently as a key focus area of his governance.
