Bayer Leverkusen winger Nathan Tella has firmly denied allegations that he deliberately avoided representing the Super Eagles, addressing what he described as a misconception about his commitment to Nigeria's national team.

The 25-year-old, who has made just one appearance for the three-time African champions, explained that injuries have been the primary reason behind his limited involvement with the national team.

"It's good. You know, I'm happy to be back. I think there's been this perception that I didn't want to play for the national team, and that's never been the case," Tella told NFF TV. "I've just been unfortunate with an injury happening the last time I got called up."

The former Southampton player has withdrawn from national team duties multiple times due to fitness concerns, leading to speculation among fans and observers that he might be prioritizing his club career over international commitments.

Commitment to Nigeria

Tella, who is currently part of the Super Eagles squad for the ongoing Unity Cup invitational tournament, emphasized his dedication to representing Nigeria.

"I'm happy. I'm happy to be here, happy to be back, and always happy and honored to represent," he stated. "I mean, it gives me a chance to connect, connect to my roots, represent the country of my family, myself, and gives me a chance to play with pride."

The Unity Cup tournament provides Tella with an opportunity to establish himself in the national team setup and potentially silence critics who have questioned his commitment to the Super Eagles.

Nigeria is set to face Ghana in the tournament, with Jamaica already securing their place in the final. The Super Eagles, under pressure to perform following recent disappointments, will be looking to Tella and other players to make significant contributions during the competition.
