Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers has expressed delight at his return to the Super Eagles squad after more than a year's absence from the national team setup.

The 30-year-old striker, who last featured for Nigeria in a friendly against Mali in March 2024, has been consistently overlooked for national team duties despite impressive performances at club level.

Speaking to the Super Eagles media team ahead of Nigeria's participation in the Unity Cup invitational tournament in London, Dessers emphasized his enthusiasm about the call-up.

"I'm very happy to be back. It's always an honour to be called up and to be here with the boys and the staff," Dessers said. "When you look in the mirror, you see Nigeria. At the moment I got the call, I didn't have to think about it for a long time. When you get the call you want to go, I went."

The striker's return comes at a crucial time as the three-time African champions prepare to face their West African rivals, the Black Stars of Ghana, in their opening fixture of the Unity Cup on Wednesday.

Dessers' inclusion in the squad follows consistent performances for Scottish giants Rangers, where he has been in fine form. His return strengthens the Super Eagles' attacking options as they look to make an impact in the invitational tournament.

The Unity Cup serves as an opportunity for the technical team to assess players ahead of more competitive fixtures, with the Nigeria-Ghana clash reigniting one of Africa's most storied football rivalries.
