Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers has affirmed his Nigerian identity despite being born in Belgium, stating that he sees himself as "a full-blooded Nigerian" whenever he looks in the mirror.
The Rangers of Scotland forward made these comments while expressing delight at his return to the national team following Nigeria's 2-1 victory over Ghana in the Unity Cup clash held at the Gtech Community Stadium in London on Wednesday.
"When you look in the mirror, you see Nigeria," Dessers told the Super Eagles media team. "At the moment I got the call, I didn't have to think about it for long. When you get the call, you want to go, I went."
Dessers, who qualifies to represent Nigeria through his Nigerian mother, made his senior international debut for the Super Eagles in October 2020. The Belgian-born striker scored a crucial goal in Nigeria's victory over Ghana, further cementing his place in the national team setup.
The forward expressed his ambition to represent Nigeria in major tournaments in the future, highlighting his commitment to the national team's cause despite his European upbringing.
With this win against Ghana, Nigeria has advanced to the final of the Unity Cup 2025, where they will face Jamaica, who also secured their place in the final earlier in the tournament.
Dessers' declaration of allegiance comes at a time when the Super Eagles are looking to strengthen their squad with diaspora talents, as evidenced by recent developments including Tosin Adarabioyo's reported consideration of his international future.
