The African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate for Anambra State, Mr. John C. Nwosu, has declared that only a coalition of opposition parties can rescue Nigeria from what he termed as misgovernance under the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.
Speaking to journalists in Awka on Wednesday, Nwosu, who recently left the Labour Party to join ADC before securing the party's governorship ticket, emphasized that forming a coalition has become necessary due to the current state of governance in the country.
"Rescuing Nigeria is now a compelling imperative. Given the level of state capture and poor governance we are witnessing, it is in the common and national interest to arrest the drift," Nwosu stated.
Explaining his recent political movement, Nwosu said: "I have moved to ADC. We have values and choices. You need to be able to defend the platform from where you operate. Where there are obvious conflicts to conscience and integrity, you excuse yourself or risk being party to the wrongdoings, that was why I left APC. ADC presented a credible alternative."
Coalition Formation
When questioned about the rumored coalition centered around ADC and its potential members, Nwosu emphasized that the focus should be on the urgent need to address Nigeria's governance challenges rather than on specific individuals involved.
"Coalition is exactly what it says – a gathering of like minds or people or platforms with a similar or common interest," he explained. "However, personalities and candidates can drive or influence a coalition. The common interest now is to salvage the sinking ship called Nigeria."
Nwosu's comments come amid growing discussions about opposition parties potentially forming alliances ahead of future elections, with the ADC appearing to position itself as a rallying point for politicians dissatisfied with both the ruling APC and other existing political platforms.
Political analysts note that such coalition talks have intensified as Nigeria faces economic challenges and as parties begin strategic positioning ahead of the next electoral cycle.
