Former President Muhammadu Buhari has rallied support for his successor, President Bola Tinubu, as the administration marks its second anniversary in office on May 29, 2025.
In a statement released on Wednesday via his X account and signed by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, Buhari encouraged Nigerians to maintain optimism about the country's future while tempering their expectations of government.
"Our expectations from our governments should not get heavy," Buhari stated, emphasizing that reforms implemented by the All Progressives Congress (APC) government would yield results gradually rather than overnight.
The former president cautioned against allowing necessary reforms and desired changes to fall victim to political considerations. He expressed support for the Tinubu administration's ongoing efforts to address poverty and inflation, which he acknowledged have severely impacted the poorest Nigerian families.
Buhari emphasized that tackling these economic challenges should be a collective responsibility. "The private sector and all of us as citizens must join in all ways we can," he noted.
Concluding his message, the former president offered congratulations to Tinubu on completing two years in office, stating: "I am wishing President Tinubu heartfelt congratulations on his two years in office. May you keep leading with wisdom and care."
President Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023, following his victory in the February 2023 presidential election, taking over from Buhari who completed his constitutionally allowed two terms.
