Former Nigeria youth international goalkeeper Bassey Akpan has expressed profound disappointment following Akwa United's relegation from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Akpan, who currently serves as the goalkeeper trainer for the Promise Keepers, described the relegation as the "saddest moment" in his entire career.

"It's like a bone stuck in the throat, difficult to take," Akpan told Complete Sports. "This is my second year in coaching, and I think seeing Akwa United relegated is the saddest moment in my entire career."

Akwa United finished in 18th position on the NPFL table, resulting in their demotion to the Nigeria National League (NNL) for the upcoming season.

The emotional impact of the relegation has been severe for Akpan, who revealed he has been unable to sleep at home since the team's fate was sealed.

"It's difficult to accept. I haven't slept in my house since then because sleep has eluded me. I'm just returning home on Wednesday. It's painful. We gave it our best. But it wasn't to be. So painful," he lamented.

Despite their determined efforts to avoid relegation, the Promise Keepers couldn't secure enough points to maintain their NPFL status, bringing an end to their top-flight journey for at least one season.

The club will now regroup and focus on securing an immediate return to the premier division through a successful campaign in the NNL.
