The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, CP Aboki Danjuma, has ordered a thorough investigation into the alleged murder of Mr. Chibugo Amadi, a father of eight children, who was reportedly killed by his kinsmen following a land dispute.
According to police sources, CP Danjuma has directed the homicide section of the Command's Criminal Investigation Department to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing after receiving a petition from the deceased's family.
Mrs. Chinonye Amadi, wife of the deceased, narrated that the incident occurred in their village, Umuora in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area. She alleged that her husband was stripped naked and beaten with weapons until he collapsed and died.
"The problem started on April 3, 2025, when my husband disagreed with his younger brother, Ezemonye Amadi, over a land matter," Mrs. Amadi explained. The dispute reportedly escalated into a physical altercation where her husband inflicted injuries on his younger brother before fleeing the community, fearing retaliation.
During his absence, Mrs. Amadi claimed that village elders adjudicated the matter and imposed a fine of ₦850,000 on her husband. She further alleged that the kinsmen conspired to sell four plots of her husband's land at ₦200,000 each—significantly below the market value of ₦1,500,000 per plot—and gave the proceeds to his injured brother as compensation.
"Despite accepting all actions taken by his kinsmen in his absence, my husband was lured back to the community under the guise of a final settlement. Upon his return, he was forcefully taken to Mkpacha Umuora where he was subjected to torture which resulted in his death," she disclosed.
Chidiebube Okeoma, founder of Stand for Humanity Foundation, corroborated Mrs. Amadi's account, stating that the alleged perpetrators recorded the beating and shared the videos on social media platforms. According to Okeoma, after the deceased was confirmed dead at a hospital in Okwelle, Onuimo Local Government Area, the suspects allegedly abandoned the body at the morgue and fled.
"We have undertaken the matter and the petition written by our legal adviser, Chijioke Onwubuariri, to the CP has been approved. It is an intentional murder. We have video clips of how they deliberately murdered him," Okeoma stated.
The spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, has assured that justice would be served in the matter as investigations continue.
