The National Caretaker Committee of the Labour Party, under the leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman, has officially endorsed the participation of Peter Obi, the party's 2023 presidential candidate, in ongoing coalition talks aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
In a statement released by Senator Usman's media aide, Ken Asogwa, the committee expressed full support for the coalition movement, which it described as being "driven by the Nigerian people." The statement also reaffirmed Peter Obi's right to contest the 2027 elections under the Labour Party platform should the coalition efforts fail to materialize.
Senator Usman criticized the Julius Abure-led faction of the party for opposing Obi's participation in the coalition talks. She maintained that Abure and his associates, whom she described as having been "shown the exit door for their anti-party activities," have no authority to question a move that is "clearly rooted in national interest aimed at dismantling the rudderless Tinubu administration."
"It is worth reiterating that Obi has consistently maintained that his interest lies solely in a coalition focused on eradicating hunger, insecurity, and poor governance – a vision that aligns squarely with the founding principles and aspirations of the Labour Party," the statement read.
The committee questioned the true agenda of Abure and his supporters, asking: "Is it that they disagree with Obi and the Labour Party that Nigeria is presently facing an unprecedented crisis requiring collective action to salvage?"
Senator Usman's statement also dismissed the legitimacy of a purported 2024 national convention frequently referenced by the Abure faction, describing it as "self-convened, unlawful, and ultimately denounced by the Supreme Court of Nigeria as illegal." She characterized the continued reference to this convention as "not only misleading but also a flagrant contempt of the Supreme Court's judgment."
The public has been advised to disregard statements from those "masquerading as party leaders" and to rely solely on communications from the office of the National Caretaker Committee led by Senator Nenadi Usman.
This development comes amid increasing political realignments as various opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir El-Rufai, reportedly unite against President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
