Authorities in Sabha, Libya, have arrested five Nigerian nationals for allegedly stealing electrical equipment from a farm, according to a statement released by the Migrant Rescue Watch on Monday, May 26, 2025.

The suspects were apprehended by officers from the Al-Qahira Police Department on Sunday, May 25, and have been referred to public prosecution for further legal action.

"Libya 25.05.25 – Al-Qahira Police Dept. (Sabha) arrested 5 migrants of Nigerian nationality for theft of electrical equipment from a farm. All referred to public prosecution for legal action," the Migrant Rescue Watch stated in their social media post.

This incident has sparked discussions about the challenges faced by migrants in Libya and the increasing reports of arrests involving foreign nationals in the North African country.

The arrest comes amid growing concerns about the welfare and legal situations of Nigerian migrants in various countries. Libya has been a major transit point for migrants attempting to reach Europe, with many facing difficult living conditions and legal challenges.

This development follows a separate case reported earlier where 22 Nigerians were arrested by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in connection with financially motivated sextortion schemes that allegedly led to suicides among American teenagers.

As of the time of reporting, Nigerian authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the arrests in Libya or any diplomatic efforts to address the situation.
