The Taraba State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel S. Bretet, has appealed for calm and promised decisive action following deadly attacks in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area where over 37 people were allegedly killed by herders.
During an on-the-spot assessment visit to the affected communities, CP Bretet urged community leaders to advise residents to remain within secured environments and to assist security agencies with timely information that would enable prompt response to security threats.
According to a statement issued by the command's spokesperson, James Leshen, the Commissioner has reviewed the security architecture of the area and deployed additional manpower to rebuild public confidence following the tragic incident that occurred last Saturday.
"The purpose of my visit is to ensure that peace is restored," the CP stated, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the rule of law. He further warned that individuals or groups provoking incessant disturbances would face decisive legal action.
The police commissioner reaffirmed the Command's commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring residents that sufficient security measures are now in place to restore peace and normalcy in the affected communities.
Bitrus Danjos, the Chairman of Karim-Lamido Local Government Area, commended the Commissioner of Police for his swift intervention and pledged full support, including intelligence sharing, to promote peace in the area.
The attack, which occurred last Saturday, resulted in the mass burial of over 37 victims allegedly killed by herders, turning the council area into what local sources described as a "graveyard."
This incident adds to the growing concerns about herder-farmer conflicts in various parts of Nigeria, with Taraba State experiencing several deadly clashes in recent years.
