The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has sealed the National Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) located at Wadata Plaza in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, over unpaid ground rent spanning 28 years.
According to Lere Olayinka, media aide to the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, the opposition party owes the FCTA a total of N7,603,504.31 in ground rent arrears accumulated over nearly three decades.
In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, Olayinka expressed surprise at the party's inability to settle the debt despite generating substantial revenue from nomination forms during elections.
"On Wadata Plaza being used as PDP National Secretariat, N7,603,504.31 is being owed as 28 years Ground Rent," Olayinka wrote. "Meanwhile, I paid N2.7m for the PDP Nomination Form for the House of Reps in 2022. In my Federal Constituency, 3 of us who were aspirants paid N2.7m each, making N8.1m."
The sealing of the PDP headquarters is part of a broader enforcement action by the FCTA. On March 18, 2025, the administration revoked 4,794 land titles in prime areas of Abuja, including the Central Area, Garki I and II, Wuse I and II, Asokoro, Maitama, and Guzape districts.
These properties were among 8,375 land titles whose owners had defaulted on ground rent payments for up to 43 years. The building housing the PDP secretariat was identified as one of the affected properties whose titles were revoked.
Reports indicate that other high-profile establishments, including Access Bank and a Total Petrol Station, have also been sealed by the FCTA over similar ground rent defaults.
The development comes at a challenging time for the PDP, which has been grappling with internal conflicts and leadership issues since losing the 2023 presidential election. The party had reportedly scheduled a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which may now be affected by the closure of its headquarters.
As of the time of this report, the PDP has not issued an official response regarding the sealing of its national secretariat or plans to settle the outstanding ground rent.
