The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has sealed off an Access Bank branch and a Total petrol station located in Wuse, Abuja, due to non-payment of ground rent.
The enforcement action, carried out on May 26, 2025, is part of a larger initiative targeting property owners who have defaulted on their statutory obligations to the FCT Administration.
According to FCTA officials, the closures follow a significant crackdown that recently resulted in the revocation of 4,794 land titles across prime districts in Abuja, including Wuse, Maitama, Asokoro, and Garki. These revocations were prompted by unpaid ground rents, some of which have been outstanding for more than a decade.
The administration revealed that a total of 8,375 property owners currently owe approximately ₦6.97 billion in ground rent arrears, with some cases dating back over 40 years.
FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, emphasized that the revocations were executed in accordance with Section 28(5) of the Land Use Act. This provision allows the government to reclaim land from titleholders who fail to meet the conditions of their occupancy rights.
The sealing of these high-profile establishments signals the administration's determination to enforce compliance with property regulations in the Federal Capital Territory, regardless of the status of the defaulting entities.
Property owners in Abuja are advised to verify their ground rent status and settle any outstanding payments to avoid similar enforcement actions.
