Two prominent Nigerian football clubs, Heartland FC and Akwa United, have been relegated from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following the conclusion of the 2024/2025 season on Sunday.

Despite Heartland securing a 2-1 victory over Akwa United in their final match at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, the win proved insufficient to save either team from relegation. Both clubs needed favorable results elsewhere to maintain their NPFL status.

Heartland FC, also known as the Naze Millionaires, finished the season in 17th position, marking their fourth relegation in the last decade. The once-dominant club has struggled with consistency in recent years, cycling between Nigeria's top flight and the lower division.

For Akwa United, this relegation represents a significant setback as it marks the first time the Promise Keepers will be demoted from the NPFL since their promotion to the top flight.

Both clubs will now compete in the Nigeria National League (NNL) next season, joining Sunshine Stars and Lobi Stars who had already been confirmed for relegation earlier.

The relegation battle on the final day was particularly tense as both teams entered their encounter knowing that only a win, combined with unfavorable results for other relegation-threatened teams, could possibly save them from the drop.

Despite Heartland's victory in front of their home supporters, other results did not go their way, confirming their relegation alongside their opponents.

Football analysts have pointed to inconsistent performances, management issues, and financial challenges as contributing factors to both clubs' disappointing seasons.

The relegated teams will now focus on restructuring and preparing for life in the NNL, with the ultimate goal of securing immediate promotion back to the NPFL for the 2026/2027 season.
