The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has sealed off a three-storey residential building located in Ilasan, Lekki Peninsula II, under Eti-Osa Local Government Area, following the discovery of illegal discharge of untreated wastewater and faecal matter into public drains.

According to an official statement posted on the Lagos State Government's Facebook page, the building's occupants were using a pumping machine to discharge waste at night into surrounding roads, drains, and the nearby lagoon, creating significant environmental hazards.

The environmental violation came to light following a tip-off from a concerned whistleblower. LSWMO officials described the act as deliberate and dangerous, with potential to spread communicable diseases among residents while causing damage to the local ecosystem.

"The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has continued to demonstrate its dedication to ensuring credible and sustainable wastewater management with the clampdown on a three-storey residential building at Ilasan Lekki peninsula II for a deliberate discharge of untreated wastewater and faecal matter into the public drains, through the use of a pumping machine," the agency stated.

The statement further explained that the pumping machine was primarily operated at night to avoid detection while polluting the environment and exposing citizens to health risks.

The General Manager of LSWMO commended the whistleblower for their civic responsibility and encouraged other Lagos residents to remain vigilant and report similar environmental violations. He assured that all reports would be handled with strict confidentiality while reaffirming the agency's commitment to protecting public health and the environment.

This enforcement action underscores the Lagos State Government's ongoing efforts to maintain environmental standards and ensure proper wastewater management across the metropolis, particularly in rapidly developing areas like the Lekki Peninsula.
