The paramount ruler of the Idoma Nation, His Royal Majesty Agaba'Idu Elaigwu Odogbo, has issued a directive ordering all armed herdsmen to vacate Idoma land with immediate effect.

This order was contained in a communique released following an emergency meeting of the Idoma Area Traditional Council and local government chairmen held at the Och'Idoma's Palace in Otukpo on Wednesday.

The meeting was convened in response to escalating insecurity in the region, particularly recent killings allegedly perpetrated by armed Fulani herdsmen.

In the communique signed by the council, the traditional rulers expressed profound concern over what they described as "heinous acts of violence" that have resulted in the loss of numerous lives in the area.

"All armed herdsmen are to be persuaded and directed to leave Idoma land immediately to prevent further conflicts and senseless killings of Idoma sons and daughters," the council stated.

The traditional council also called on the Benue State Government to engage with herder groups to ensure farmlands are vacated, allowing farming activities to resume without fear or intimidation.

Additionally, the council urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious movements and activities in their communities.

This development comes amid growing tensions between farming communities and herders across the Middle Belt region of Nigeria, with similar directives recently issued by other traditional institutions including the Tiv Traditional Council, which also ordered herdsmen to leave Benue by the end of May.

The situation continues to pose significant security challenges in Benue State, with recent reports of attacks in various communities resulting in casualties and displacement of residents.
