The Federal Government has announced its commitment to complete phase three of the East-West Road by December 2025, with particular focus on the 15-kilometre dual concrete carriageway from Eleme to Onne in Rivers State.

According to a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday by President Bola Tinubu's personal assistant on special duties, Kamorudeen Yusuf, the Eleme axis of the road will be opened to traffic within the next 10 days.

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, confirmed that while the Eleme section will soon be accessible, full structural completion, including flyovers and bridges, will be completed during the upcoming dry season.

"By June 1, 2025, work will resume on the Port Harcourt-bound section of the N156 billion East-West Road that links the Niger Delta region," the statement indicated.

The East-West Road project, valued at N156 billion, is described as more than just an engineering achievement. It represents a strategic economic corridor connecting Nigeria's industrial centers, including refineries, petrochemical plants, and export terminals.

The road has been designed with modern features including reinforced concrete, solar lighting, CCTV surveillance, tolling points, and rest areas. According to the presidency, these features reflect a "futuristic, durable infrastructure vision" expected to serve the nation for the next 50 to 100 years.

"President Tinubu's bold leadership is transforming how roads are built in Nigeria, from temporary fixes to enduring solutions that anchor development, trade, and national cohesion," the statement added.

The 338-kilometer East-West road has remained uncompleted for 19 years, despite numerous promises by successive administrations. The current administration's commitment to completing this critical infrastructure project marks a significant development for the Niger Delta region, which hosts much of Nigeria's oil and gas infrastructure.
