Nigerian defender Benjamin Frederick has expressed his delight after being named Brentford's Young Player of the Season for the 2024/2025 campaign.
The 19-year-old, who initially joined the Premier League club on loan from Simoibein Football Academy in August 2023, has made significant progress since his move was made permanent in April 2024 when he signed a four-year contract with the Bees.
Though Frederick is yet to make his competitive debut for Brentford's first team, he has been named on the bench four times this season and featured in three pre-season matches, showing his potential and steady integration into the squad.
Speaking to Brentford's official website after receiving the award, the former Flying Eagles star expressed gratitude to his teammates for their support during his adaptation period.
"I'm really pleased to be recognised by my team-mates," Frederick said. "Coming from Nigeria, I've had to adapt to a new environment and playing style, but I'm happy that the hard work I have put in is paying off."
The young defender's recognition highlights the growing presence of Nigerian talent in the English Premier League, with Frederick joining the ranks of promising Nigerian footballers making their mark in one of the world's most competitive leagues.
Frederick's development at Brentford will be closely watched by Nigerian football fans as he aims to break into the first team and potentially earn a call-up to the senior national team in the future.
