Ikorodu City FC have described their President Federation Cup semi-final exit as a "tough defeat" after losing 5-4 on penalties to Nigeria National League (NNL) side Abakaliki FC on Wednesday.
The match, played at Bwari Stadium in Abuja, ended goalless after regulation time before Abakaliki FC emerged victorious in the ensuing penalty shootout.
Despite the disappointing result, Ikorodu City, nicknamed the Oga Boys, commended their players for showing courage throughout the tournament. The club took to social media platform X to express their sentiments.
"Tough defeat in Abuja against Abakaliki FC. Hats off for a courageous season fight lads! Top stuff," the club stated.
The defeat ends Ikorodu City's impressive cup run in what has been a remarkable debut season in Nigerian top-flight football. Despite the semi-final exit, the club has much to celebrate as they are set to finish in the top half of the 2024-25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table in their maiden campaign.
Abakaliki FC, meanwhile, advance to the President Federation Cup final where they will face Kwara United, who emerged from the other semi-final contest. The final promises to be an intriguing battle between the NNL side and their NPFL opponents.
For Ikorodu City, attention now turns to concluding their impressive league campaign on a high note as they look to secure the highest possible finish in the NPFL standings.
