George Wendt, the American actor who gained international fame for his portrayal of the beer-loving character Norm Peterson on the iconic NBC comedy series 'Cheers', has died at the age of 76.
According to a statement released by his publicist, Melissa Nathan, on Tuesday, Wendt passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
"Beloved actor and comedian, George Wendt known for starring in the NBC hit comedy Cheers, has passed away. He will be missed forever," the statement read.
The family has requested privacy during this difficult time as they mourn the loss of the celebrated actor.
Wendt's character Norm Peterson became a cultural icon during the 11-season run of 'Cheers' from 1982 to 1993. His entrance into the Boston bar, always greeted with a chorus of "Norm!" from the other characters, became one of television's most recognizable moments.
Throughout his career, Wendt received six Emmy nominations for his role on 'Cheers' and went on to make numerous appearances in other television shows and films after the series ended.
