The Edo State government has discovered and sealed a brothel operating inside a primary school in Esan West Local Government Area, officials announced on Thursday.
Eugene Okolosie, the State Coordinator for the Protection of Government Property (PGP), revealed this shocking discovery during a press briefing in Benin City. The brothel was found within the premises of Ujuele Primary School and has since been sealed by authorities.
"The community came to inform us that land grabbers forged their signatures and we moved into action and recovered about 90 percent of the land back, including lands belonging to schools," Okolosie stated.
"For example in Ujuele Primary School, they built a brothel inside the school and we have sealed the brothel. Some of these properties will be converted, and we are presently discussing with the governor on the matter," he added.
The announcement came as part of a broader government initiative to reclaim encroached public lands across the state. According to Okolosie, the government has successfully recovered over 2,000 plots of land from land grabbers.
In a concerning revelation, the State Coordinator disclosed that over 150,000 houses in Edo State were built on government lands, highlighting the scale of the encroachment problem facing the state.
The discovery of a brothel operating within a primary school compound raises serious concerns about the safety and well-being of students. The government has not yet announced what specific actions will be taken regarding the individuals responsible for establishing the brothel.
Officials indicated that discussions are ongoing with the governor regarding the future use of the reclaimed properties, including the sealed brothel site.
