Detained Biafra activist Simon Ekpa has strongly denied allegations linking him to killings in South-East Nigeria, issuing a stern rebuke to Biafra Radio for what he termed "defamatory publications" regarding violence in Imo and Anambra states.

Speaking through his legal representative, Mr. Jonathan Levy, Ekpa specifically addressed a March 27, 2025 publication titled 'ESN/IPOB Was Never Involved in the Barbarism That Happened in Orsu and Other Communities in Imo and Anambra States—IPOB,' which he claims contained false information about him and his Biafra Liberation Army (BLA).

"The publication contains false, defamatory, and malicious statements concerning our client and its affiliates, particularly in reference to USB's Prime Minister, Mazi Simon Ekpa, an affiliate of the Biafra Liberation Army (BLA)," the statement read.

Ekpa, who leads the United States of Biafra (USB) movement and is currently facing trial in Finland, vehemently rejected accusations that he or his organization were responsible for acts of violence in the region.

"These allegations are patently false, unsubstantiated, and defamatory. Neither Mazi Simon Ekpa, the BLA defence force, nor any affiliated entity or official of the United States of Biafra has been involved in any such acts," the statement continued.

The Ekpa-led group has demanded an immediate retraction of the publication, suggesting that the content attributed to Emma Powerful, described as IPOB's spokesman, indicates "infiltration of Radio Biafra as no Biafran would accuse one of their own imprisoned leaders of such treachery."

Ekpa's legal team further threatened legal action under "applicable domestic and international defamation laws both in the United Kingdom and the United States," claiming the publication has caused "significant reputational damage, threats to the safety of USB affiliates, and undermines the political and diplomatic efforts of the Biafran liberation movement."

This development comes amid ongoing legal proceedings against Ekpa in Finland, where he faces charges related to terrorism. The Finnish authorities have been investigating his activities and alleged connections to violence in Nigeria's South-East region.

The South-East region of Nigeria has experienced increased insecurity in recent years, with various groups being blamed for attacks on security personnel, government facilities, and civilians. The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), have repeatedly denied involvement in these violent incidents.
