The Nigerian Senate has passed a resolution calling for the establishment of a military base in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State to address the resurgence of Boko Haram activities in the North-East region.
The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Aminu Abbas (PDP-Adamawa) and co-sponsored by all senators from the North-East geo-political zone during Wednesday's plenary session in Abuja.
The motion, titled "Resurgence of Boko Haram activities in Hong and Gombi Local Government Areas, Adamawa and other North-East states," highlighted the deteriorating security situation in the region.
While commending the performance of law enforcement agencies, the upper chamber urged the federal government to establish the military base to reinforce existing personnel of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies in the area.
The Senate also directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to cushion the effects of attacks on affected communities.
Senator Abbas, while moving the motion, noted that repeated Boko Haram attacks on communities in Hong LGA had left thousands of innocent people homeless with their properties destroyed. He emphasized that the insurgency has spread across the North-Eastern states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa.
"The unfortunate activities of the group have adversely affected economic activities in the areas, the zone, and the country at large. People in the affected areas no longer go to farms or embark on trading activities," Abbas stated.
Senate Chief Whip, Mohammed Monguno, in his contribution, commended the Nigerian military for their determination and commitment in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgency. He also praised President Bola Tinubu's administration for providing political support to the military.
Monguno recalled that at one point, two-thirds of local governments in Borno and Yobe were under Boko Haram control. "As a result of the political will by the Tinubu-led federal government, as well as the determination and enthusiasm displayed by the military, Boko Haram was dislodged. But now there is a resurgence of Boko Haram again, which is sad, to the extent that they attack our military formations, dislodge them, and cart away military equipment," he noted.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in his remarks, called for increased vigilance, noting that Nigeria's porous borders allow insurgents to escape and later return to attack communities.
"There is a need for continued vigilance because any time the fight abates and they think that the military has relaxed, they will carry them unawares by a series of attacks. Our borders are very porous. So anytime they escape from Nigeria because some of them are not from Nigeria, they still find their ways into our communities and attack our people," Akpabio said.
The establishment of a military base in Hong LGA is expected to strengthen security operations and provide faster response to insurgent activities in the region, potentially bringing relief to affected communities who have suffered from the renewed attacks.
