One person has been confirmed dead and several others injured after a truck with failed brakes crashed into Isheri Market at OPIC bus stop along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on Wednesday morning.

According to eyewitnesses, the truck was approaching the OPIC area from Lagos when the driver lost control due to brake failure. In an attempt to avoid crashing into the estate gate, the driver swerved right, sending the vehicle plowing through market stalls.

"While I was at the OPIC bus stop roundabout, a container coming from Lagos reached the OPIC bus stop. When he was coming, there was no traffic on the express, he didn't have brakes when he tried to enter the estate, he then crashed into the market and killed a person," a motorcyclist who witnessed the incident told reporters.

The fatality was identified as a local tea vendor who was serving customers at the time of the accident. The crash also left several people injured while destroying goods and structures in its path.

One of the survivors, a night security guard at the market, narrowly escaped death. He recounted: "I'm the security man of this place. Every morning, I sit with my people before they open for the day because I work at night. I had just called the tea seller to give me tea, and I had only tasted it once when I heard loud noises. I stood up, and the truck pushed me and I fell."

"It's God that saved me that I fell to the right side, assuming I followed the other side I would have died. The man who gives me tea is the one who died," he added.

The eyewitness emphasized that no one was pursuing the truck driver before the accident occurred, suggesting it was purely a case of mechanical failure.

Emergency responders and local authorities remained at the scene to clear the wreckage and assess the extent of the damage. The truck driver has been arrested and is currently in the custody of the Isheri Tactical Unit as investigations continue.

This incident adds to the growing list of accidents on the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway, raising concerns about vehicle maintenance and road safety measures in the area.
