The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized 36,935 litres of petrol allegedly intended for illegal exportation from Adamawa and Taraba states to Cameroon, with an estimated value of N104,456,550.

Adamawa and Taraba Area Controller of the NCS, Bashir Garba, disclosed this during a press conference held on Tuesday at the NCS Area Command headquarters in Yola. According to Garba, the petroleum products were packed in 1,219 jerry cans of various sizes and 24 drums with capacities ranging from 25 to 200 litres.

"We are pleased to say that during the reporting period of four weeks, the command had another seizure with the monetary value of N104,456,550," Garba stated.

The Area Controller explained that the seized petroleum products were intended for exportation to neighboring Cameroon, highlighting the ongoing challenge of cross-border fuel smuggling in the region.

In addition to the fuel seizure, Garba revealed that the command also intercepted 101 pieces of raw donkey skin packed in seven sacks, which were allegedly being smuggled out of the country.

"The 101 raw donkey skins seized and presented here today translate to the killing of 101 live donkeys by smugglers," Garba lamented, expressing concern over the potential extinction of donkeys due to unregulated hunting. He emphasized that donkeys should be protected from wanton killings as they serve multiple purposes.

The Nigeria Customs Service continues to intensify efforts to combat smuggling activities along Nigeria's borders, particularly in the northeastern states of Adamawa and Taraba, which share boundaries with Cameroon.
