The Benue State government has officially announced the passing of Retired Colonel Joseph Akaagerger, the former military governor of Katsina State. According to a statement released on Tuesday by Mr. Tersoo Kulai, Chief Press Secretary to the Benue State Governor, Akaagerger died on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at the age of 69.

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State expressed profound sadness over Akaagerger's sudden demise, describing him as a patriotic Nigerian who dedicated his life to serving both the nation and Benue State with distinction.

"Colonel Akaagerger gave the nation and Benue State his very best during his time," Governor Alia stated in the release. The governor further highlighted Akaagerger's exemplary service as a lawmaker and Senator, noting that the deceased had proven his quality not only in politics but also in business, community service, and philanthropy.

Governor Alia prayed for the eternal rest of the departed soul, acknowledging the significant contributions Akaagerger made throughout his lifetime of service.

Colonel Akaagerger's career spanned military service, governance, and legislative duties. After his military career, during which he served as the military governor of Katsina State, he ventured into politics and was elected as a Senator representing Benue State.

The Benue State government has not yet announced funeral arrangements for the late statesman as of the time of this report.
