Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has extended his condolences to the families of 37 traders from Niger State who lost their lives in a boat mishap at Gbajibo while traveling to Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State on Thursday.
In a statement released by his spokesman, Rafiu Ajakaye, on Sunday in Ilorin, Governor AbdulRazaq described the incident as "painful and unacceptable," particularly highlighting concerns over the recurring disregard for safety measures.
"The Governor has urged boat operators and passengers to adhere to safety regulations for the good of all," the statement read, noting that the government had repeatedly provided safety gadgets that were not being utilized.
According to reports, the tragic accident occurred due to overloading and adverse weather conditions, despite mandatory directives requiring passengers to wear life jackets and avoid nighttime travel.
The Governor also extended his condolences to the government of Niger State, praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased victims.
This incident underscores ongoing safety challenges in water transportation across Nigeria's riverine communities, where compliance with basic safety protocols remains a significant concern despite government efforts to enforce regulations.
