Former USA international Alexi Lalas has publicly criticized Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi for his behavior towards referee Tim Ford following a recent Major League Soccer (MLS) match.

The incident occurred after Inter Miami's 3-3 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Stadium, where Messi was visibly upset over a refereeing decision in the closing moments of the game.

During the 93rd minute of the match, the Argentine forward made a last-ditch run and appeared to be fouled just outside the penalty box following a sliding tackle by Daniel Munie. Messi immediately appealed for a free kick, but referee Ford waved play on.

After the final whistle, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner confronted Ford over his decisions. The situation escalated to the point where San Jose Earthquakes manager Bruce Arena had to intervene and restrain Messi after the referee reportedly threatened to send him off.

Speaking on his State of the Union podcast, Lalas did not hold back in his assessment of Messi's conduct.

"I thought it was a bad look for Messi, to be quite honest with you," Lalas said. "And I loved the way that game was refereed. I loved that at times the referee was saying, 'No, you get up. I don't care that you are Messi.'"

The former USA international added: "You have plenty of deference. You are given the benefit of the doubt. I am talking to Messi time and time again on the field."

Lalas also praised Arena's handling of the situation, describing the San Jose coach as "a legend" who managed the incident well in his home stadium.

Messi joined Inter Miami a few years ago as a free agent after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, bringing his star power to the MLS. While his presence has significantly boosted the profile of the league, this incident has sparked debate about preferential treatment for star players in American soccer.
