The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has categorically stated that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cannot allocate its presidential ticket to a northern candidate in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

Wike made this declaration during a media chat on Monday, in what appears to be a direct message to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who was the party's presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.

"PDP cannot give the presidential ticket to the North (in 2027). Selfishness can kill a system," Wike stated firmly during the interview.

The FCT Minister further explained the implications of such a decision on Nigeria's political landscape, drawing parallels with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

"For example, if Mr President runs and wins in 2027, by 2031 APC will send their presidential ticket to the North. PDP will do what then? You will come back then and say since APC is sending it to the North, we should follow them and give it to the North?" Wike questioned.

This statement comes amid ongoing discussions about zoning arrangements within Nigeria's major political parties as they begin preparations for the next general elections.

Wike, who has been a prominent figure in the PDP, has recently been at the center of political controversies, particularly regarding his relationship with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his support for President Bola Tinubu of the APC.

The Minister's comments highlight the continuing debate about power rotation between Nigeria's northern and southern regions, a principle that has been a significant factor in the country's political arrangements since the return to democratic rule in 1999.

Political analysts suggest that Wike's statement may further deepen divisions within the PDP, which has been struggling to maintain unity following its defeat in the 2023 presidential election.
