The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described the ongoing construction of three major bus terminals in Abuja as a critical step towards revolutionizing the city's transport infrastructure.
During an inspection tour on Tuesday, Wike visited two of the three terminals currently under construction at Mabushi and Kugbo, as well as the access road leading to the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal in Dakibiyu.
"We are happy that we're providing this kind of infrastructure. You will agree with me that the bus terminal is a basic intervention for us to change our transport system," Wike stated while addressing journalists at the project sites.
The FCT Administration awarded contracts in 2024 for the development of bus and taxi terminals in Mabushi, Central Area, and Kugbo as part of efforts to modernize public transportation in the nation's capital.
Expressing satisfaction with the progress of work, the minister commended the contractors for their diligence. "We're quite impressed with what we have seen. I commend the contractors for a job well done. We will try as much as we can to make sure that the projects are delivered within the agreed timeline," he said.
Wike emphasized that the terminals would help organize Abuja's currently chaotic public transport sector by encouraging the use of designated boarding points, which would significantly enhance passenger safety.
"That, of course, will limit the incidence of 'one chance'—criminals who pose as drivers to rob unsuspecting passengers," he explained. "So that's the sense of building these terminals, and also to clean up the city so we don't have buses all over the road, turning every roadside into a motor park."
Regarding the access road project in Dakibiyu, the minister expressed optimism that it would be among the key projects set for commissioning to mark President Bola Tinubu's second year in office.
Wike reassured FCT residents that the Tinubu-led administration remains committed to delivering high-quality infrastructure aimed at improving the quality of life for people in the Federal Capital Territory.
