The national leadership of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria has officially suspended the Chairperson of its Rivers State Council over allegations of misconduct and blatant disregard for the organization's protocols.
The suspension was announced in an official letter jointly signed by TUC National President, Festus Osifo, and Secretary General, Nuhu Toro. The letter, addressed to the State Vice Chairperson, Hassan Anka, detailed the reasons behind the disciplinary action.
According to the communication, the suspended chairperson had repeatedly granted press interviews without obtaining approval from the National Secretariat. This breach of protocol continued even after being issued a query on June 20, 2024, to which the chairperson had reportedly responded with an apology.
The TUC leadership, however, found the chairperson's response "unconvincing" and noted that despite the apology, the official continued addressing the media, making what they described as "inflammatory remarks" that brought the Congress into disrepute.
"The chairperson's actions left the Congress with no choice but to further review his role and interest," the letter stated. As a result, the official has been relieved of duties as Chairperson of the Rivers State Council, effective from the date of receipt of the letter, pending further notice.
The TUC has not yet announced who will permanently replace the suspended chairperson, though Vice Chairperson Hassan Anka is expected to assume leadership responsibilities in the interim.
This development comes amid increasing tensions within labor unions across Nigeria as they navigate complex political and economic challenges affecting workers' rights and welfare.
