The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully prosecuted two individuals for abusing the Nigerian currency at a social event in Lagos.

Tobilola Olamide, popularly known as "TobiNation," and Babatunde Peter Olaitan, also known as "TDollar," were each sentenced to six months imprisonment with an option of N200,000 fine by Justice Alexander Owoeye of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos on Thursday, May 8, 2025.

The convicts were arraigned on separate one-count charges of tampering with Naira notes, an offense that violates Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act, 2007. Both defendants pleaded guilty to the charges when presented before the court.

According to court documents, the incident occurred on April 8, 2025, at a social gathering held at 23 Macdonald Road, Ikoyi. The EFCC initiated investigations after viral TikTok videos showed the defendants spraying N200 notes while dancing.

During the proceedings, EFCC investigative officer Ibrahim Bukar testified that the agency began a TikTok-based intelligence probe on April 10, which led to the identification and subsequent invitation of the suspects.

"Olaitan admitted to spraying the Naira at a nightclub after a fan gifted him a bundle of N200 notes," Bukar informed the court.

The prosecution team, led by counsels C.C. Okezie and H.U. KofarNaisa, presented video evidence and the defendants' extrajudicial statements, all of which were admitted by the court as exhibits.

In his ruling, Justice Owoeye convicted the defendants and imposed the sentence, emphasizing that such acts undermine the integrity of Nigeria's national currency.

This case highlights the ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to enforce laws against currency abuse, particularly the practice of spraying money at social events, which remains a common but illegal practice in the country.
