At least six people, including children, were killed when suspected Fulani herdsmen launched a deadly attack on Adógó settlement in Mbakundu Kindred of Tombo, Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State.
The attack occurred around 11:00 pm on Sunday night, with the assailants reportedly arriving in large numbers armed with automatic weapons under the cover of darkness.
According to Haakyav Tombu Peter, a prominent son of the affected community who shared details in a viral video on his Facebook page, the attackers went from house to house, shooting residents and attacking them with machetes.
"The invaders went from house to house shooting and cutting down innocent people with machetes," Peter stated in his account of the incident.
Local sources reported that the attack lasted for hours without any security intervention to aid the helpless villagers. The bodies of six victims have been recovered and deposited at the Community Health Clinic at Adógó.
Five of the deceased victims have been identified as Ansambe Akpen, Shina Ayom Akpen, Bade Jam Ata, Shiekuma Kpebee, and Sughter Avindigh Taku, while the identity of the sixth victim is yet to be ascertained.
Efforts by reporters to confirm the incident from the Spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command were unsuccessful, as calls to the official's mobile telephone were not returned at the time of this report.
This attack comes amid ongoing security challenges in Benue State, where clashes between herders and farming communities have resulted in numerous casualties and displacement of residents in recent years.
Governor Hyacinth Alia had previously announced plans to convene a North-Central Security Summit to address the recurring killings in the state, though the date for this meeting has not yet been confirmed.
