The House of Representatives Committee on Land Transport has summoned the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Kayode Opeifa, and the Managing Director of Railway Property Management Company Limited, Timothy Zalanga, to appear before it on Wednesday, May 21, 2025.
The summons follows concerns raised by the committee regarding the operations of the NRC and the management of its assets across the country. Committee Chairman, Hon. Blessing Onuh, emphasized that the invitation is not aimed at witch-hunting but ensuring government agencies fulfill their responsibilities.
During their meeting, committee members expressed serious concerns about the alleged indiscriminate sale of NRC properties without due process. They highlighted troubling reports that NRC pensioners and staff are being evicted from their quarters while these properties are being sold off.
"Sections 88, 89, 128, and 129 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are very clear about the oversight power of the legislature," Onuh stated, adding that her committee "will not watch and allow things to go in the wrong direction."
The committee has directed both the NRC and Railway Property Management Company to submit relevant documents regarding their 2022, 2023, and 2024 budget performance. Additionally, they must provide details of NRC assets and any Public-Private Partnership arrangements by Tuesday, May 20, 2025, a day before their scheduled appearance.
Hon. Onuh further stated that the committee would work toward collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure success in the land transport sector, with particular focus on improving the railway transport system.
This development comes amid growing concerns about the management and utilization of government assets in Nigeria's transportation sector, particularly as the country seeks to revitalize its railway infrastructure.
