Residents of Aduragbemi community in Ido-Osun, Osun State, took to the streets on Friday to protest the collapse of a newly tarred road that was washed away by rainfall just one day after its completion.
The aggrieved protesters, carrying placards, marched through the affected area while accusing the contractor of executing substandard work. They called for immediate intervention from Governor Ademola Adeleke, expressing outrage that the road failed to withstand its first rainfall.
According to reports, the road connecting Trade Fair/Ido-Osun Junction to Adeleke Estate via Aduramigba was tarred on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, but was completely destroyed after rainfall on Thursday, May 15.
Social media user Adekeye Moses alleged that "rumour has it that the road was approved to be stone-based but was instead constructed using laterite," a cheaper and less durable material, suggesting possible corruption or negligence in the project execution.
The community residents have demanded that the state government investigate the project and hold the contractor accountable for the substandard work. They insist the road must be reconstructed according to proper standards.
In response to the incident, Olawale Rasheed, spokesperson to Governor Ademola Adeleke, confirmed that the contractor has already been issued a query. "The contractor is queried already. The Ministry is issuing a statement soon," Rasheed stated.
The Ministry of Works is expected to release an official statement addressing the situation and outlining further actions to be taken.
This incident has raised concerns about quality control in infrastructure projects across Osun State and highlights the importance of proper oversight in government-funded construction works.
