The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has announced a significant financial boost for female football in Nigeria with a ₦24.5 million prize money package for the 2025 Premiership Super 6 tournament.
According to a statement released by NWFL Media Director Samuel Ahmadu on Thursday, the champions will receive ₦10 million, maintaining the same payout from the previous two seasons. However, the runners-up and third-placed teams will now take home ₦6 million and ₦4 million respectively, each reflecting a ₦1 million increase from last year's tournament.
In a move aimed at greater inclusivity and support for all participating clubs, the bottom three teams will also benefit from the increased prize structure, earning ₦1.5 million each. This represents a significant improvement from the ₦500,000 they received in the previous edition.
NWFL Chairperson Nkechi Obi emphasized that the new prize structure aligns with the league's broader vision of professionalizing women's football in Nigeria.
"This is a deliberate step to ensure that all clubs leave the NWFL Premiership Super 6 with something tangible. By increasing the financial rewards, especially for the bottom three, we're reinforcing our commitment to professionalizing the women's game and encouraging more investment at club level," Obi stated.
Beyond the financial incentives, the 2025 Super 6 winner will earn Nigeria's sole ticket to the WAFU Zone B qualifiers for the CAF Women's Champions League. This creates a potential pathway to the first-ever FIFA Women's Club World Championship if they reach the final.
As the tournament heads into its final matchday on Saturday, May 17, the title race remains wide open. Four clubs are still in contention: Bayelsa Queens, reigning champions Edo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and first-time contenders Remo Stars Ladies.
The increased prize money and continental opportunities highlight the growing investment in women's football in Nigeria, potentially attracting more talent and resources to the female game in the country.
