The Kano State Government has issued a strong warning to health workers against the diversion of medical equipment and drugs from public health facilities, promising severe consequences for offenders.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by Deputy Governor Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, delivered the warning during the official flag-off ceremony for the distribution of health intervention commodities across the state.
"We will not tolerate the diversion or misuse of these life-saving materials. Any health worker caught in such acts will face the full weight of the law," the governor declared.
The governor emphasized that all distributed medical supplies—targeting seven categories of diseases—must be provided to patients completely free of charge, reinforcing the administration's commitment to accessible healthcare.
Major Health Interventions Launched
The warning coincides with the launch of significant health interventions under the state's "Abba Gida-Gida" initiative, which includes:
- Dental chairs
- School health services
- Free eye spectacles
- Free sickle cell medication
- Diabetic screening kits
- Maternal health packs
Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, Commissioner for Health, stated that these interventions are specifically designed to support vulnerable populations and align with the government's comprehensive health policy.
The commissioner also highlighted significant achievements in the health sector, including the renovation of 260 health facilities and improved routine immunization efforts throughout Kano State.
Support from Traditional and Local Leaders
The Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi II, represented by Alhaji Muhammad Aminu Yusuf, commended the government's efforts in reforming the health sector.
Similarly, ALGON Chairperson Hajiya Sa'adatu Yusuf Soja pledged full support from local governments to ensure the success of these health initiatives.
Both traditional institutions and local governments have committed to supporting the state's efforts to improve healthcare delivery and prevent the misappropriation of medical resources.
The government's crackdown on drug theft comes as part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening public trust in the healthcare system and ensuring that medical resources reach their intended beneficiaries.
