The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has strongly denied any involvement in the killing of Ahmed Gulak, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, insisting that the timing of events contradicts accusations against the group.
In a statement issued by IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful, the group emphasized that Gulak was killed on Sunday, May 30, 2021, while their sit-at-home order was enforced on Monday, May 31, 2021 – a full day after the incident.
"The sit-at-home observance declared by IPOB for the annual 30th May Remembrance Day in 2021 was held on Monday, 31st May 2021, not Sunday the 30th. Gulak was murdered on Sunday, a full day before the observance," Powerful stated.
The statement comes in response to the presentation of Gulak's death certificate during the ongoing trial of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu. IPOB has dismissed this evidence, claiming it has "no evidentiary value whatsoever" to the proceedings.
Powerful accused the Federal Government's prosecuting counsel, Awomolo SAN, of attempting to "reintroduce evidence after closing his examination-in-chief," describing it as an "unethical and unacceptable legal maneuver designed only to mask the shame of a failed prosecution."
The IPOB spokesman further alleged that the prosecution witness admitted under oath that no investigation report exists to support the charges against Kanu, suggesting that the case against the IPOB leader has collapsed.
"This timeline alone dismantles the fabricated claim that IPOB had any involvement in his death. The attempt to retrofit this tragic event into their crumbling narrative is not just deceitful—it is criminal," Powerful added.
The group drew parallels between the current situation and historical events, claiming that "this is not the first time the Nigerian State has weaponized misinformation and historical revisionism to justify ethnic persecution," referencing how the 1966 coup was "falsely labelled an 'Igbo coup' to ignite the genocidal war against our people."
IPOB has called on the media to be objective in their reporting of the ongoing trial and the allegations against the group.
