The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to mark the 2025 June 12 Democracy Day by releasing the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, as a gesture toward promoting human rights and national reconciliation.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, MASSOB leader Uchenna Madu emphasized that Kanu's release would significantly contribute to national healing and unity while fostering improved relations between the federal government and various ethnic groups, particularly those in the Southeast region.

"MASSOB believes that releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will open the door for meaningful dialogue aimed at addressing the long-standing grievances of the southeastern region, especially regarding self-determination and calls for greater autonomy," Madu stated.

Symbolic Timing for National Reconciliation

The appeal comes at a particularly symbolic moment in Nigeria's democratic history, with June 12 representing the embodiment of democratic principles and values of freedom, justice, and equity in the country.

According to Madu, the call for Kanu's release "echoes the sentiments of many individuals and organisations across Igbo land, Nigeria, and the global community who view his release as a critical step toward resolving broader political and social challenges."

The group further emphasized that their appeal is anchored on key democratic values and principles of the rule of law, reflecting a wider aspiration for justice and recognition of the rights of the Biafran people within the Nigerian federation.

This development comes as President Tinubu recently commissioned the renovated International Conference Centre in Abuja, with various political activities building up to the Democracy Day celebrations.
