Rivers United technical adviser Finidi George has expressed strong confidence that his team will secure a CAF Champions League qualification spot as the 2024-25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season comes to a close.
The Pride of Rivers currently occupy second position on the NPFL table with 61 points, just one point ahead of third-placed Abia Warriors, setting up a tense final matchday in the race for continental qualification.
"We are still in a good place," Finidi told Rivers United's media. "We have our last home match, and if we win that one, we will get that second place."
Rivers United will host Nasarawa United in Port Harcourt for their final fixture of the season, while Abia Warriors will travel to Lagos to face Ikorodu City. The outcome of these matches will determine which team secures the coveted second position that guarantees CAF Champions League football next season.
According to NPFL regulations, the league champions and runners-up will represent Nigeria in the CAF Champions League, while the third-placed team, alongside the Federation Cup winner, will participate in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Remo Stars have already been crowned NPFL champions for the 2024-25 season and will lead Nigeria's charge in Africa's premier club competition next season.
For Rivers United, a win against Nasarawa United would guarantee their Champions League spot regardless of Abia Warriors' result. However, any slip-up could see them drop to third place if Abia Warriors secure victory in their own fixture.
Finidi George, a former Nigerian international who has been at the helm of Rivers United this season, remains optimistic about his team's chances of finishing the job at home and securing elite continental football for the Port Harcourt-based club.
