The legal team of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has demanded an explanation from the Department of State Services (DSS) for preventing his lead counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), from meeting with him at the DSS facility in Abuja.
Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu's Special Counsel, expressed outrage over the incident in a statement released via X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, describing the DSS action as "a flagrant interference with fair trial."
"The @OfficialDSSNG needs to explain to Nigerians why it blocked Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN from meeting with his Client MAZI NNAMDI KANU," Ejimakor wrote. "They did this a few minutes ago & the high Chief has left the DSS facility, very upset. This is a flagrant interference with fair trial. #Injustice."
Kanu has remained in DSS custody since June 2021 following his arrest and extraordinary rendition from Kenya to Nigeria. Despite the Court of Appeal in Abuja discharging and acquitting him of all treasonable felony charges, the Nigerian government has refused to release him.
The IPOB leader's case has seen recent developments, including Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja Federal High Court stepping down from the trial. The matter was subsequently reassigned to Justice James Omotosho of the same court, under whom the Nigerian government has filed terrorism charges against Kanu.
Currently, the prosecution is presenting witnesses who are testifying against the IPOB leader in the ongoing trial.
The DSS's decision to block Agabi's access to his client has raised serious concerns about Kanu's right to fair legal representation and due process, as his legal team continues to challenge what they describe as his unlawful detention.
