The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has called for urgent security intervention in the escalating boundary crisis between Oku Iboku in Itu Local Government Area and Ikot Offiong community in Cross River State.

The lawmakers' appeal follows Tuesday's attack by suspected assailants from Ikot Offiong that reportedly left two people dead, several others missing, and caused significant damage to fishing boats and equipment in Oku Iboku.

In a motion of urgent public importance presented by Hon. KufreAbasi Edidem, Deputy Speaker and representative of Itu state constituency, the House emphasized the need for immediate action to prevent further violence in the riverine community.

"If the security situation in Oku Iboku is not urgently addressed, it may degenerate further, leading to more loss of lives and property, as well as a shortage of essential food commodities which the community supplies to the state," Edidem warned during the presentation.

The Assembly unanimously resolved to urge Governor Umo Eno and relevant security agencies to intensify gunboat patrols along the Oku Iboku waterways. The lawmakers also recommended the establishment of a naval or marine base in the troubled area to provide lasting security.

Speaker of the House, Udeme Otong, directed the Clerk to communicate these resolutions to the governor and other relevant authorities for immediate implementation.

Oku Iboku, a predominantly fishing and farming community, has been the site of recurring inter-communal clashes with neighboring communities in Cross River State over the years, resulting in periodic displacements and fatalities.

Observers have again called on all levels of government to find a lasting solution to the conflict, which continues to threaten lives, livelihoods, and food security in the region.
