The management of Adamawa State Polytechnic, Yola, has announced the reopening of the institution following its closure last month due to student protests. Academic activities are scheduled to resume on Monday, May 19, 2025.

The institution was shut down on April 28, 2025, after students took to the streets to demonstrate against persistent blackouts and water shortages on campus. The protest led to an immediate closure of the polytechnic by the management.

According to a circular signed by the Acting Registrar, Mr. Simawa Ayuba, students will be required to pay a N3,000 levy as a condition for readmission. The circular further stipulates that students must provide evidence of payment for first semester registration fees and sign an undertaking to be of good behavior.

"All students are required to comply with these conditions before being readmitted to continue their studies," the circular stated.

The reopening comes after approximately three weeks of academic inactivity, raising concerns about the impact on the academic calendar. However, the management has not provided details on how the lost time will be recovered.

The N3,000 levy has sparked mixed reactions among students and parents, with some questioning the purpose of the additional financial burden. The management has yet to clarify whether the funds will be directed toward addressing the infrastructure issues that triggered the protests.

This development comes at a time when many Nigerian tertiary institutions are grappling with infrastructure challenges and funding issues, often resulting in disruptions to academic activities.
